What was the Rwanda Genocide?
In 1994, there were seven million people living in the African country, Rwanda. It was made up of three ethnic groups: about 85% were the Hutus, 14% were the Tutsis, and 1% were the Twa. In the early 1990s, Hutu extremists in Rwanda’s political elite blamed the entire Tutsi minority population for the country’s skyrocketing social, economic, and political pressures. Tutsi civilians were also blamed on supporting a Tutsi rebel group, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF). Through the use of propaganda and constant military training, Habyarimana, who was the president at the time, and his group increased tension between the Hutus and The Tutsis by the end of 1992. The Hutus remembered past years of Tutsi rule, and many of them not only lived in terror everyday, but they also feared the minority.
On April 6, 1994, a plane with President Habyarimana, a Hutu, was shot down. Violence began almost right after that. Almost to war, Hutu extremists put their plans in action to destroy the whole Tutsi civilian population. Political leaders who might have been able to take charge of the situation and other enemies of the Hutu extremist plans were killed . Tutsi people were killed in their homes and as they tried to escape. Roadblocks were set up across the country during the genocide. Whole families were killed at a time. Women were raped. About 200,000 people took part in torturing the Rwandan people in the Rwandan genocide.
