Slavery
Slavery is a system in which people are treated as property and are forced to work. Since the 1600’s, white rich people owned colored people. These slaves were forced to clean and do many other chores. Slaves would get whipped, scolded at or beaten by their masters even when they did nothing wrong. African Americans were treated like animals and were disrespected. African Americans were discriminated and they were segregated from whites. Whites and colored people had to use different bathrooms, and African Americans couldn’t even sit in the front of a public bus. They had to sit in the back. These events relate to the Rwandan Genocide because slavery discriminated a certain race, whereas the Rwandan Genocide planned on killing a specific ethnic group, the Tutsi’s. A whole entire race was treated unfairly, just like the Tutsi’s were being treated. African Americans and were tortured. They were beaten and in pain. During the Rwandan Genocide, many Tutsi’s were raped and were tortured as well. African Americans were forced to do things they didn’t want to do and had to endure many painful events, just like the Tutsi’s.
Native Americans and the Trail of Tears
Native Americans/American Indians were the first people who live in North America. Native Americans gathered food and then later in history planted crops and they also hunted. The woman took care of the children, made clothes, and harvested crops, while men hunted. In the late 1800’s, settlers settled on the land Native Americans lived on. Native Americans were forced to live on reservations. A reservation is a large area of land that was set aside for the Native Americans to live on. Native Americans lost areas of land in the Western regions because miners and settles increase and wanted the Native American’s land. Living on reservations was very hard for the Native Americans because it made it almost impossible for them to hunt buffalo. Many American Indians died due to disease on reservations. Alcoholism, depression and bad health were big problems on reservations as well.
In 1938, many American Indians were relocated. President Andrew Jackson enforced the Indian Relocation Act of 1830. Tribes like the Cherokee and the Creek were forced to relocate to new territory, under the command of the U.S. Army troops. Many Native Americans died along the way and 4,000 Cherokee’s died . This was called the Trail of Tears because the American Indians did not want to go. This event relates to the Rwandan Genocide because we treated Native Americans cruelly. We forced them off their land so that settlers could have better lives, whereas their lives were terrible. We stole their land! Another way this relates to the Rwandan Genocide is how a specific group were tortured and forced to do something they didn’t want to. Native Americans faced terrible times while living on the reservations. Tutsis faced terrible times as well because there were woman being raped and abused and a whole ethnic group was being eliminated.
